To improvise, they decided to use a badminton ball and some ping pong paddles.

Initially, they played on a badminton court using the ping pong paddles, but soon realized that the ball bounced a lot on the asphalt floor. To solve this problem, they adjusted the dimensions of the court and created a lower net. In addition, they designed a perforated plastic ball, similar to a golf ball, which had a more predictable flight and was easier to hit with the paddles.

The name «pickleball» came from a combination of elements. According to the story, the name came from Joel Pritchard’s dog, named «Pickle». Apparently, the dog used to grab the badminton balls during the game, so they decided to name the sport «pickleball» after him. However, it is also rumored that the name may have come from a sailing term referring to a boat in distress with no fixed course, known as a «pickle boat.» Whatever the exact origin of the name, what is certain is that it has stuck over the years and has come to represent this unique sport.

Pickleball quickly began to gain popularity on Bainbridge Island and spread to other nearby communities. In the 1970s, the first official rules of the game were established and the first associations were formed. As more people discovered the sport, pickleball expanded nationally and internationally.
